Naval Base Kitsap – Bremerton is the shipyard-and-carrier half of Naval Base Kitsap — home to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS), one of the Navy's premier industrial facilities, and a carrier homeport. Established as Naval Station Bremerton in 1946 and merged into NBK in 2004, it sits in Bremerton on Sinclair Inlet, on the Kitsap Peninsula. It home-ports two Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and four fast-attack submarines, and Naval Hospital Bremerton is on base.
If you have orders here, your tour will likely revolve around industrial / maintenance work — drydock availabilities, overhauls, and the shipyard rhythm — more than fleet operational tempo. The workforce mixes active-duty Navy with a large civilian federal shipyard workforce, much like Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The upside: a walkable, affordable small city, a direct ferry to Seattle, and the Pacific Northwest at your door.
This guide covers where to live (Bremerton itself, Silverdale, and the central-Kitsap towns), schools, BAH, the gates, and the honest tradeoffs.
The base, in brief
Bremerton's mission is maintenance and overhaul — PSNS is a full-service shipyard with drydocks sized for carriers, plus submarine work. The base also home-ports carriers and fast-attack boats, and hosts Naval Hospital Bremerton, the regional Navy hospital for the whole Kitsap complex.
Bremerton and Bangor (the Trident submarine side, ~20–30 minutes north) together form Naval Base Kitsap, the third-largest Navy base in the country — services are shared across the two.
Your first week at NB Kitsap – Bremerton
- Call your sponsor. They'll know the gate, parking, and the building you report to — the shipyard is large and building numbers matter.
- Check in to your command. Orders, shot record, dependent IDs, originals of marriage / birth certificates.
- CAC / RAPIDS / DEERS. Standard ID-office slate; DEERS-enroll dependents.
- Vehicle registration + base decals. Washington has its own rules and no state income tax — sort plates early.
- Housing. Decide on-base PPV vs. off-base early; the housing office covers both.
- Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC). Relocation, financial counseling, spouse employment.
The Puget Sound region
Puget Sound is water-and-mountains country — an inland sea between the Olympic and Cascade ranges. The defining PCS fact is ferry geography: Bremerton is on the Kitsap Peninsula, separated from Seattle by the Sound, with a Washington State Ferry running Bremerton ↔ downtown Seattle. That keeps Kitsap quieter and more affordable than the Seattle side.
Upsides: no state income tax, world-class outdoors, and a direct foot-ferry to a major city. Tradeoffs: the gray (long wet winters), a high regional cost of living, and ferry dependency if your life pulls toward Seattle.
Where to live: commute zones from Bremerton
- Closest (Bremerton / East Bremerton): In and around the city itself — the most affordable, walkable-to-base option; an easy commute to PSNS.
- Silverdale: The central-Kitsap commercial hub north of Bremerton — newer subdivisions, shopping, the Central Kitsap schools; a manageable commute and close to Bangor too.
- Port Orchard: Across Sinclair Inlet to the south — more house for the money, a waterfront small-town feel, a reasonable commute.
- Poulsbo / North Kitsap: Farther north — charming, well-regarded, a longer drive but popular for the schools and the Seattle-ferry option.
Surrounding-area guides for these towns are coming. Drive your real route at 0700 — and factor the ferry if Seattle is in your plans.
Gates and access
Bremerton / PSNS has multiple shipyard gates. The named main entrances include the Bremerton Gate (near the ferry terminal) and the Decatur Gate on the west side. Hours rotate by gate; confirm yours with your command. Visitor passes for non-DoD-ID guests go through Visitor Control with sponsorship documentation.
On-base life — services and family programs
- Medical — Naval Hospital Bremerton is on base: the regional Navy hospital and TRICARE Prime hub for the Kitsap complex.
- Commissary + NEX — NBK commissary + Navy Exchange services on the Bremerton side.
- MWR — strong outdoor-recreation MWR (marinas, the Sound, gyms, ITT) — the Kitsap location is the draw.
- Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC) — relocation, financial counseling, spouse employment.
- Spouse employment — PSNS and the Navy dominate the Kitsap job market; the wider Seattle/Tacoma market is large but ferry-gated.
School districts
- Bremerton School District — covers the city of Bremerton.
- Central Kitsap School District — Silverdale and central-peninsula areas.
- South Kitsap (Port Orchard) and North Kitsap (Poulsbo) round out the common options.

BAH and cost of living
Bremerton sits in the Bremerton/Kitsap, WA military housing area (MHA) — the same MHA as Bangor. Pull current rates from defensetravel.dod.mil/site/bahCalc.cfm; they change every January.
Washington has no state income tax, but Puget Sound cost of living is high. Bremerton itself is among the more affordable spots in the metro. The BAH Budget tool computes your specific coverage and gap.
Practical PCS logistics
- Shipyard rhythm. PSNS is industrial — schedule-driven, milestone-paced, less deployment-tempo than a fleet base (carriers here are often in maintenance).
- Ferries are infrastructure. The Bremerton ↔ Seattle ferry is a genuine commute option — and a constraint if you rely on it.
- The gray is real, and the region is earthquake country (Cascadia). Know your home's situation.
- Summer is the peak move season — and Puget Sound summers are spectacular.
